Ainu Culture
The Ainu are indigenous people in Japan. They developed a unique culture including the Ainu language and a “spiritual culture” of believing that everything in nature is Kamuy (“deity” in Ainu). Traditional music with special instruments as well as uniquely embroidered patterns, wood carvings and other crafts are also part of their culture.
Hiking
Hike at the foot of the Mt. Io volcano to learn about unique vegetation and local history. Hike in the deep forest along Lake Kussharo – the largest caldera lake in Japan and encounter wildlife that is uniquely different from that on Japan’s main island while learning the many hidden stories behind the scenery.
